Evolution Korea
For a long time the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to get evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even complete genomes. Over many generations, these changes can result in the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process through which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. As time passes, this difference in reproduction can lead to the emergence of completely new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed down to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references to the evolutionary roots of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?
Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology and helps scientists to understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also shows how various species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to better understand nature and make useful discoveries, such as the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe as well as life on this planet, and it has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over many years. The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions, such as developing medications, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and still others have a deep faith in God and are seeking to know how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Although some creationists are not Christian but they are a majority. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary as well as special creation. They consider their views to be "theistic evolution.” This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were created at the same time and that they evolved slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its aim is to root out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
